Homeschooling 101

Aug 3rd, 2007 | By | Category: Coffee Klatch, Homeschool

The kids and I were discussing last week, what we needed to accomplish before starting our homeschool up again for the year. They can’t wait, but I’m not ready yet.

Our list:

1. Setup school website. There is so much valuable info to supplement us, and with two of them reading well now, we decided this was a good year to make use of a private website. They each have their own blogs, a school blog, online plans and really fun links. It is password protected for them only right now, but they are beginning to blog on glissent.com. Done – Yippeeeee

2. Clean our classroom area thoroughly. It’s a basement, semi-finished, playroom area that gets used during the summer by three little run-amuckers and two hairy dogs. So there is a deep cleaning sorely needed. I’m also going to move a 10ft wall unit to one side. We will have this as a library, but also, I can use the backside for a large bulletin display area. It also has a built in enterntainment center, so that will come in handy for our listening / video lab. Right now, we have a lean-to holder with some big cushions on the floor. It will be nice to have a larger shelving area. I’ll just cover with something really cute – maybe some yellow fabric with ribbons over batting. After all, decorating a classroom space is just as much fun as teaching in it! Glue from glue sticks, btw, can hold fabric remarkably well, and it’s washable!

3. Need to purchase workbooks and schtuff. We have $170.00 for the start of the shool year. Two workbooks and a multiplication table chart took $35 of that tonight. We still have one more workbook (abt. 16$) and school pics and haircuts (abt. 50$). That will leave $69 for supplemental things. Not too shabby. We did already pick up crayons, paper, pencils and protactors while they were really cheap two weeks ago. About 5$ for that.

Today started the sales-tax week started in Georgia. Normally, there would be good deals this week, but I noticed today the stores are just raising their prices. Notebooks that were 19 cents last week, are now 97 cents. And that was the cheapest increase. The government just basically gave the stores the money they would have gotten in the end. I still need that one workbook, but will probably wait for any other purchases until the next week when prices go back to being good deals.

One of the purchases we were thinking might come in handy, was a projector. I don’t think it warrants the expense, not now anyway, but I did find a place that rents them, Lubbock projector rental. Maybe that will be an option for the future.

In the meantime, maybe this helps someone to see what other homeschoolers are spending and doing this time of year.

  1. I don’t know about you, but by the time I’m done preparing for homeschool to start back up I’m ready for a vacation again!
