Maybe I’m just tired but…

I was surfing Appalachia sites - and this made me chuckle.

The Saturday Bulletin

I know, male bashing bothers me, but for some odd reason, this site reminded me of my old Aunt. I Don’t know why. lol.

I’ll try and get the weekly pictures of the garden posted tommorrow. For those of you watching, after another week, the big boy and beefsteak tomato plants are over 4′6″. I’ve had to basically tie them to Fort Hoochenu’s posts and prop their cages with a 2×4. I’m sure I did something wrong. Maybe planting them in mounded earth was not such a good idea since it probably doesn’t lack the stability to keep the cages firmly in the ground. Another few inches and I’ll have to get a step stool to be able to pick em. On the bright side, the tomatoes look really good so far and some Romas and cherry tomatoes are beginning to turn. I can’t wait.

The okra has been going like crazy, too. I’ve now decided to donate any more to the food bank as J1 and I are the only ones that like it and we have just about enough for the year. UGA’s calendar shows that it will soon be time to start the second round of plantings in August. I was really happy to read that. It also states that we should be living high on the hog so to speak. Think they wrote that before the last freeze happened. Ours are a couple of weeks late due to replanting, but the okra doesn’t seem to know that. Most of our neighbors gardens appear to be slightly behind ours too. Stands to reason, since I opted for the home center seedlings, rather than starting my own again.

Last week, we started the green onions, chives, radishes, carrots and pumpkins. The summer squash is producing pretty good but one of my plants keeps getting a hairy fungus looking thing growing on it and it only seems to grow on the bottom near the main blossoms. Anyone know what that is? I’ve been pulling off any fruit or flowers that are affected and throwing them out. So far, it’s only affecting one of the plants.

Well, pictures tommorrow. I promise. Now that the rain has slowed down to pretty much non-existent again, I’ll be mulching tommorrow. Good time to get some pics. Until then, Goodnight!

  1. My okra’s growing like crazy, too. I’m making pickled okra tomorrow, which my son is surprisingly crazy about! Don’t know what to tell you on the summer squash, except maybe try spraying it with some soapy water that has a little baking soda in it? That often helps get rid of mildew problems in my garden.

  2. Thank you very much for the tip. I will give that a try. Thus far, I’ve avoided using any kind of chemicals. The kids are great ‘good bug’ catchers and have been happy to give the critters new homes in their garden!
