I’m Still Alive – I’ve just been playing with Barbies
Oct 21st, 2006 | By Gidget | Category: ProjectsThe last time I blogged, I was thinking of changing my site around. That always requires at least a week of effort that I’m just not ready to give yet. So, I took a month off to play. lol. Then, in one of those Yikes moments, it suddenly dawned on me that I’d promised Nana pics of the kids two weeks ago. Our oldest learned to ride his bike this month and soon after so did his brother! They have a new friend and had their first dinner guest tonight. So, Aunt K.C. and Nana, if you read this, the pics are slowly making their way along the cable to the kids’ website now. Sorry for the slow posting.
I’ve started on the Christmas gifts and in the process, taught myself how to knit!!! I can purl but don’t like too, yet, haha. It took about 8 tries but I can now cast on circular needles without twisting. So, TADA – Drum Roll – Here’s my first knit project…. it took a while to untwist him, but I’m getting closer… j/k Slobo asked the ladies at the store tonight what they thought of his new hat and they laughed and told him he looked like a Dork! They further explained it was because he had on shorts and sandals with his new hat. I rather like the new lumberjack look he’s sporting. LOL. Oh well, guess it’s time to learn to purl. lol.
The next project completed is one that was alot of fun to do. An online friend had recommended Annie’s Attic for stitching instructions. While there, I purchased a couple of crochet patterns. One of them is a wedding dress for Barbie called Pearls and Lace. The single pattern isn’t available anymore, but it is available in the booklet link above. Here’s a picture from the original pattern.

The Barbie I bought was from the dollar store for $5. Her arms are jointed so it would make putting on the dress easier. The kids later showed me a commercial for her. She’s supposed to be the new spinning dancing Barbie (with 12 veiled sisters) but apparently when they made these, they forgot to put the spinny thing in her leg. So, she just has jointed arms and too much pink eyeshadow.
The pattern calls for “sewing” the dress onto the doll, but what fun is it if you can’t change her clothes? So, instead, all of her clothes snap on or tie.
Her undergarments consist of:
A princess-seamed boustier from an antique taffeta pocket lining (qualifying as the something borrowed because it wasn’t mine and the something old). It had a small rosebud print that I just loved. Had to use it. lol.
In addition to the boustier, there is a silk organza drawstring petticoat with lace. It is made from some scrap organza and a blue ribbon (The something blue).
Her veil is made of the same with a cotton cluny lace trim.
Her earrings are from a scrapbook supply. Her bouquet is made of sik ribbon roses, some I made from 1/8″ and 1/4″ ribbon, some purchased trims, and the original pink plastic rosebud that came with her. She also has a pearl choker and a pearl and diamond ring glued to her right hand. After all, she’s not married yet. The crocheted dress has pouf sleeves which are stuffed with scraps of organza.
This is the dress before adding beads and lace. This view is of the back with the snap closures on the bodice left side. It’s easier to see the crochet pattern here. The train did not turn out like the pattern picture but of course that could very much be because I didn’t follow the pattern correctly. It’s the second time I’ve used a pattern. The first time, I ended up with socks big enough to fit an elephant’s legs.
There is a crocheted bow bustle in the back with matching cluny lace. The bustle later got a pre-made ribbon flower.
The dress has small pearls glued allover with sew on cluster pearls at the neckline, sleeves and back. I borrowed some of the tiny pink roses from the ribbon trim to put in the center of each cluster.
Here’s Barbie’s Wedding Pictures:

My grandmother made a lot of clothes for my Barbie. Your work brought back fond memories of what she did for me. Very nice!
Thank You! My aunt crocheted me a purple heart pincushion when I was 15 that I still use thirty years later. This Barbie is for my 5 yr. old niece for Christmas. Since she can’t read yet, I can post that it here. lol. I hope it will bring her joy for next thirty years too.
