Finito’d with 2 weeks to spare!
May 2nd, 2006 | By Gidget | Category: ProjectsMom’s Jacket is finally finished and except for a few minor boogies, I am happy with it and immensley enjoyed hand sewing some details. My procrastination with the trims and buttons resulted in a huge delay. I didn’t realize just how long, until I was looking for the original fabric post and it took me to February in my archives. Where did the time go??! I wish there was a site of designers somewhere who I could submit pics to and say, okay, tell me what to put on this and make sure it looks fabulous!
Okay, back from my dreamstate…. Ahh Well, here are the details:
The front welt used to have battenburg trim and a different button, but in the final fitting we decided to go with a simpler approach and used an antique mother of pearl button. I think it’s much more elegant.

A picture of the inner workings. Just for fun, I used a cluny lace for the handsewn hem. I love the way the lace looks against the tweed even if no-one will see it except us.

And here is the chain detail. I wasn’t sure how to apply the chain, so I alternated sewing the links from fabric-to-lining-to-fabric.. kind of thing, even though I had chain stitched the lining in places. Of course, I had to have the chain Chanel thing on this jacket. I’ve always wanted to do it, and here was my chance. I can’t help but wonder, tho, if Coco was into bondage secretly or something, tho.

I placed the little loopdeedoo on the sleeve trim to line up with the slanted front pocket linen trim. Because this jacket reminded me of June Cleaver, I used a single pearl button (homage to an earring) on the sleeve. Yeah, I placed it at the inside edge of the sleeve deliberately because nothing bugs me more than the feel of a button when you lean on a table (even if it’s bad manners to lean your arm on the table and it’s not my jacket).

Better view of the pearl earring

And finally the finished June Cleaver goes CoCo jacket

All-in-all, tho pleased to be finished, it was fun rediscovering a love for details. Now, I’ve got to chase another butterfly – block printing. Hasta Manana.
